Summary:

What is emotional intelligence? Emotional intelligence (EI) is the capacity to be aware of and manage one’s own emotions, and the emotions of others.

According to Daniel Goleman, an American psychologist who has helped to popularize emotional intelligence, it consists of five key elements: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social competence.

It has been shown that emotionally intelligent leaders are more effective than those who lack EI. This is because they are better able to create a positive work environment, resolve conflict, and motivate employees.

There are four main components of emotional intelligence: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management.

Self-awareness:

This is the ability to be aware of one’s own emotions and how they affect others. This includes being able to understand and manage one’s own emotions, and respond appropriately to the emotions of others.

Self-management:

This is the ability to control one’s emotions and behaviours. This includes being able to set and achieve goals, maintain self-control, and adapt to change.

Social awareness:

This is the ability to be aware of the emotions of others. This includes being able to understand and empathize with the feelings of others, and respond appropriately. Self aware leaders are also better able to build relationships and trust.

Relationship management:

This is the ability to manage emotions in relationships. This includes being able to communicate effectively, resolve conflict, and build relationships.

While emotionally intelligent leaders recognize the need to be rational and cognitive in their decisions or responses, they are also open to emotions, even uncomfortable ones.

Leaders who lack emotional intelligence may tend to ignore or suppress their emotions, which can lead to problems in the workplace. They may also be less able to understand and empathize with the emotions of others, which can make it difficult to build relationships or resolve conflict.


One’s ability to both recognise and control their own emotions:

-Having a clear understanding of what you are feeling, why you are feeling it and how it is impacting your behaviour.

-Being aware of the emotions of those around you and how they are affecting them.

– Being able to regulate your emotions so that they are appropriate for the situation.

The ability to understand and manage relationships:

-Being able to communicate effectively with others.

-Being able to build relationships of trust and respect.

– Being able to resolve conflict in a constructive way.

The ability to motivate oneself and others:

– Having a clear sense of one’s goals and working towards them.

-Being resilient in the face of setbacks.

-Being able to inspire and motivate others to achieve their goals.

Emotional intelligence is a important skill for leaders to possess because it allows them to create a positive work environment, resolve conflict, and motivate employees. Those who lack EI often have difficulty in these areas.

If you are a leader, or aspire to be one, it is important to work on developing your emotional intelligence. There are many resources available to help you do this. One option is to take an emotional intelligence test, such as the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT). This will give you a good idea of your current level of EI and where you need to improve.
