The course explores the role of the contemporary manager and leader in light of more recent research about motivation, decision-making, change management and leadership. The course focuses on skills such as energizing and influencing others, empowering employees to make more effective decisions, working with diverse groups of people effectively and leading others into new ways of thinking.

This subject deals with the concept of motivation both in individuals and teams. Extensive use is made of theory, research findings and practical examples to provide an understanding of this topic. You will learn the importance paid by the recent corporate literature to personal leadership style as well as developing different skills necessary for motivating people. The course also discusses how to manage change in an organizational context and the role of values.

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the fundamental theories of motivation and explain their practical implications.

2. Identify the major approaches to employee empowerment in organizations, describe their advantages and disadvantages, and apply this knowledge to specific situations in which employees are empowered.

3. Demonstrate an understanding of how values impact decision-making processes within organizational contexts, particularly with regard to ethical decision-making.

4. Apply skills that help people work with diverse groups of employees, comprehend their needs and find ways that address those needs in order to achieve better organizational results.

5. Explain how more informal aspects of the workplace are important elements for effective team leadership using examples from contemporary organizations where they are used productively.

This course is for anyone who wants to be an effective leader in an organization, but should preferably have at least 2 years’ work experience. The course can also serve as an introduction to graduate students that do not specialize in organizational psychology or management who would like to make themselves more attractive to potential future employers by learning about this very relevant topic.
