Tips for Developing Leadership Skills

Leadership can be defined as the process of influencing people by providing vision, inspiration and direction. Leadership is not limited to members of an organization who hold official positions. It exists at all levels in organizations—from individual contributors to senior management—and it’s crucial for success. The ability to lead others begins with understanding your leadership style, setting expectations and building relationships that will help you achieve your goals.

Leadership Styles

There are many types of leadership styles . By knowing your leadership style, you can gain insight into what makes you effective (or ineffective) as a leader. One way to identify your preferred leadership style is through the “JOHARI Window,” which uses self-awareness and interpersonal communication activities to assess how well others know you—a tool that is also useful for personal growth. The four styles are:

1. authoritarian

2. democratic

3. laissez-faire

4. pacesetter

The authoritarian style is typically one in which the leader makes all the decisions and expects subordinates to carry out orders without question. This style can be effective when quick decisions are needed, but it can also lead to a lack of creativity and productivity as well as low morale among employees. The democratic style is one in which the leader solicits input from subordinates and makes decisions after considering everyone’s thoughts. This style can lead to better decision-making, but it can also be time consuming and frustrating if group members cannot come to a consensus. The laissez-faire style is one in which the leader makes only the major decisions and allows subordinates to make the rest. This style may be effective when employees know their jobs well, but can lead to confusion about who’s responsible for what if employees are not clear on their roles. The pacesetter style is one in which the leader sets high standards and expects everyone to meet or exceed them. This style can motivate employees, but it may create a negative atmosphere if people feel pressured by constantly being put under pressure.

Leadership Styles: Understanding Your Style

The objective of this assessment tool is to help you identify your preferred leadership styles—not those you’ve been given by your organization or others—so that you can learn how to use your strengths more effectively.

Once you’ve identified your leadership style, you can begin to understand the behaviors that are associated with it. For example, if you’re an authoritarian leader, you may need to work on being more flexible and consider the feelings of others before making decisions. If you’re a democratic leader, you may need to learn how to make decisions more quickly in order to stay on schedule.

Setting Expectations

As a leader, it’s important to set expectations for yourself and your team. This includes specifying what you want your team to achieve as well as what you expect from them in terms of behavior and performance. It’s also important to be clear about the rules and procedures that must be followed in order to achieve success. By setting expectations, you can avoid any confusion or misunderstandings about what’s expected of team members.

Building Relationships

As a leader, it’s important to build good relationships with your team members. This includes taking an interest in their lives outside of work, providing support and encouragement, and giving them feedback that is both positive and constructive. By establishing trust and respect, you’ll be able to create a more positive work environment in which employees are more likely to be productive and cooperative.

The ability to lead others is a key component of success in any organization.
