What is Time Management?

Time management – it’s a set of methods used to plan and schedule time more effectively and efficiently. It is a way to ensure that we spend our time in the most optimal and productive way, not only during work hours but also on weekends or vacation days.

The need to manage our time has become apparent due to the overwhelming duties of everyday life, such as raising children, attending school or university, doing housework, working, spending time with friends and family.

Time management is the process of planning and exercising conscious control over the amount of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase efficiency or productivity. It involves a balancing act, choosing not to spend time on one activity in order to engage in another. With regards to time management at work, this can be accomplished by balancing low-priority tasks with more urgent ones; for example, replying to an email may be a low-priority task which takes minimal effort and time compared to writing a report or proposal. By doing this, an employee appears more efficient to the manager, who is then likely to assign more tasks. The employees work life becomes easier because he or she does not have worry about forgetting important deadlines or having time for personal activities.

Time management requires setting goals and priorities, planning tasks in a logical order by prioritizing certain tasks over others, and spending more time on high priority tasks. Furthermore, it requires the person to manage distractions and stay focused on specific goals. Time management may require a person to adopt certain principles of productivity; such as breaking down tasks to make them easier to handle, planning ahead, avoiding procrastination, and organizing one’s priorities.

Before you get to work, take some time to plan out your professional activities. It can be done the night before or after breakfast when you are feeling fresh and rested. Write down all the tasks that need to be completed during the day and then prioritize them according to their importance levels. You should also allocate enough time for interruptions and emergencies, as you can’t predict those.
